TRAINING COURSE ON BMP IMPLEMETATION AT TRADITIONAL SHRIMP CULTURE

Background

Shrimp Aquaculture has been a tremendous business among other aquacuture species. Through export activities, million of dollars have been earned to support the country's development. The shrimp business has also provided jobs, direcly and in related business such as processing, equipment supplies and others.
Around 400.000 Ha. are available for shrimp culture ponds, located around coastal areas. Based on the technology, traditional ponds comprised of 80% total area of shrimp pond in Indonesia. Tradirional pond mainly operated by small holder farmer that occupied coastal area. Shirm culture activities,therefore provided jobs for lowto middle level economic in the population. The situationhas fall to worst dueto disease problems,mainly viral disease,causing shirmp mortalities. This led farmers in very hard condition, and most of them change their activities to culture fish species just to provide their basic income.

The training is part of the technology transfer program for shrimp production with emphasized on disease control. In this part, shrimp farmer and technician belongs to Provincia/district fisheries services were trained how to culture shrimp with proper technology that already studied and proved to be effective to control disease.

The training will be conducted for Field Facilitators from the IFC Bireuen shrimp farm project, from 5th - 24th November 2007.

Objectives
The aims of the training course are :
  1. To understand basic knowledge of Better Management Practices (BMP's) in traditional shrimp culture operation
  2. To enhance technical capabilities among Field Facilitators in shrimp culture
  3. To change in mind set how to solve their problems in shripm culture with emphasized on preventive methods
